One of the toughest interview questions you might face is, given a particular situation, what could you do better the next time. We use many different interview questions at Principal Marketing to try and determine whether someone has the right mind-set to grow on our team, and this one really gets to the heart of whether they have a student mentality. Here are some tips for answering this question:
• Be Self-Aware: Know what you did right in the situation and lead with that information. Follow this with the things you think you could improve upon, which are generally skills that you can boost or good advice you can consider for the future. Then summarize the situation focusing again on the positives.
• Reach for Improvement: There is always room for improvement and great leaders are generally their own harshest critics. View everything you do as an opportunity to learn and get a little better each time you try. • Listen: If you’re being given feedback at any point in the process, listen and incorporate it in the future. Someone is telling you exactly what you need to do to be successful.
Interviews often revolve around figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of a candidate. When we talk to someone who already knows exactly where they want to improve and can listen to feedback, then we know we’ve found the right person for our team.
